Wed Night Race Interim Series May 21 2003.

Nice sunny spring evening brought with it little wind for Wednesday Interim series Race 2. The 6pm start got delayed but at about 6:40 the wind filled in from the north and the racing proceeded. The wind was very patch and with a strong flooding tide this made for some very challenging sailing.

Nine Olsons made it to the start. The line was square and the boats lined up fairly evenly. There was a split with some looking to go left and some looking at the right. Often as the Northerly fills in there is a Westerly shift favoring the left. The current was far softer on the right.

Aliens, Wild Turkey and Bad Dog took off on the right and Lunch box on the left. The rest of the fleet was evenly spaced in the middle. The wind was still very light on the course slowly shifting a little West but half was up the leg it started to go back to the East. This allowed Wild Turkey and Aliens to make a break. Wild Turkey rounded with a bear away set. Aliens rounded and gybed in the big easterly shift. This allowed them to jump into a lead, which with the angle be came a one gybe precession to the mark.

On the last windward leg to the finish Aliens and Wild Turkey where in a taking dual trying to make something happen. Bad dog rounded behind and went back to the west allowing Enigma to sail straight for the break water and current relief. This move allowed Enigma to close right up on Bad Dog. Bad Dog held onto third with enigma coming in just behind. Aliens and crew fresh from some good finishes in the J24 on Tuesday night series again showed there skills to take the win with Wild Turkey second.

The conditions where very challenging and it was important to hit the puffs and keep the boat speed up. We are all looking forward to race 3.
